Mary Jo McInerny

Mary Jo has a wide variety of specialties. She works with children, adolescents, and adults on a wide variety of issues. She is also a member of a national crisis network. Her specialty areas are crisis counseling, ADHD, anger management, divorce and separation, mood disorders, grief, loss, impulse control, stress management, women’s issues and mediation. Through cognitive behavioral and solution focused therapy, Mary Jo believes that persons can be resilient in the face of adversity. There can be an opportunity or a new beginning through a process of self-discovery and awareness of building or finding strength, courage, and hope to find their resiliency to cope with today’s complex world.

Mary Jo has worked in the counseling profession for 30 years in school, clinical, and Department of Juvenile justice settings as well as being a Supreme Court Certified Divorce and Family Mediator. For the past 10 years Mary Jo has also been member an adjunct faculty and academic advisor at Webster University in the graduate program for clinical counseling and at Furman University as an adjunct teaching undergraduate students how to mediate their conflicts.

Giving back to a community though volunteerism has been a long time theme in Mary’s Jo life. She has volunteered as a chaplain’s assistant while she was married to a Navy officer helping new wives adjusting the role of a military wife, judicial appointment to South Carolina Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission, serving on the Board for the Upstate Mediation Center for 8 years, and on the crisis team at the Greenville Mental Health Center.

Born and raised on Sullivan’s Island in the Lowcountry, Mary Jo graduated from College of Charleston then moved to Winter Park Florida. There she graduated from Rollins College with Master’s degree in Counseling. Upon return to Charleston, Mary Jo attended the Citadel for advanced studies in counseling. Personally she has had multiple roles in life as a military wife and a single mom of three children who are now grown and independent.

Mary Jo has worked in Charleston and Greenville County schools as a counselor and at district level supporting counselors in their roles at school. Mary Jo has also worked at the Governor’s School of the Arts as a crisis counselors and has developed and coordinated district wide crisis teams. She has been in private practice for four years.
